Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about CARB compliance and our mobile testing services

Who can perform Clean Truck Check emissions compliance testing on my vehicle?

Compliance testing must be performed by a CARB credentialed tester who has completed CARB's free online Tester Training Course and scored at least 80 percent on the accompanying exam. Upon successful completion, you will obtain a Certificate of Completion, which must be renewed every two years.

What are my 2024 Compliance Requirements?

In 2024, all vehicles will have a compliance deadline between July 1 and December 31, 2024. As part of this compliance demonstration, owners must pay the vehicle's 2024 annual compliance fee and ensure the vehicle has no outstanding enforcement violations.

When do the emissions compliance testing requirements begin?

Emissions compliance testing requirements are effective October 1, 2024. All compliance deadlines on or after January 1, 2025 will require the submission of a passing emissions compliance test as part of the vehicle's compliance demonstration. Emissions compliance testing must be performed by a CARB credentialed tester and passing tests may be submitted by the tester up to 90 days prior to the vehicle's compliance deadline to allow time for any necessary repairs.

Am I required to report and pay an annual compliance fee?

For vehicles subject to Clean Truck Check, you must pay your annual compliance fee before the due date to remain compliant. The annual fee increases in accordance with California's Consumer Price Index. For example, the compliance fee for 2025 will be $318. In 2024, the annual compliance fee deadline is due based on the vehicle's compliance deadline that falls between July 1 and December 31, 2024.

Has Enforcement Started for Clean Truck Check?

Clean Truck Check began in January 2023 with the use of roadside emissions monitoring devices (REMD) to screen for vehicles that may have high emissions. Vehicles flagged as potential high emitters will receive a Notice to Submit to Testing (NST) from California Air Resources Board (CARB) enforcement to ensure the vehicle is operating with properly functioning emissions control systems.

Which vehicles are not subject to the regulation?

The following heavy-duty vehicle types are not subject to the regulation: Zero-emission vehicles, Military tactical vehicles, Emergency vehicles, Agricultural vehicles, Non-vehicles with engines certified to the most stringent optional NOx standard, and Motorcoach registered outside of California.

What is CARB compliance testing?

CARB compliance testing ensures your diesel vehicles meet California Air Resources Board emissions standards. It's required for commercial diesel vehicles operating in California.

How often do I need emissions testing?

Most commercial diesel vehicles require annual emissions testing, but frequency may vary based on vehicle age, type, and usage patterns.

Do you provide mobile testing services?

Yes! We bring our certified testing equipment directly to your location, whether it's your business, depot, or roadside location.

What happens if my vehicle fails the test?

We provide detailed reports on any issues found and can recommend certified repair facilities. We also offer re-testing services once repairs are completed.

How long does the testing process take?

Most emissions tests take 30-45 minutes per vehicle. We work efficiently to minimize downtime for your fleet operations.
